The Digital Manufacturing (DM) programme combines a set of technical core courses to provide students with all the skills and competencies to drive the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0. Graduates will be able to integrate computation and digital technologies into production processes to foster automatisation, robotisation and digital transformation of Manufacturing.
This programme allows students to deepen their knowledge of cutting-edge digital technologies and their industrial-oriented applications, with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E Minor) to transform ideas into concrete technological solutions, products and services for Industry 4.0, enabling manufacturing firms to drive sustainable growth and competitiveness in Europe with tangible economics gains in efficiency, productivity, increased revenues, and investment.
First-year program at POLIMI
Politecnico di Milano offers the entry-year for Digital Manufacturing (60 ECTS) specifically designed for Computer Engineering students, combining a Technical Major with a Minor in Innovation & Entrepreneurship and a thematic Summer School.
The following summarizes the study plan for the first year. Please notice that, on the basis of the curriculum of previous BSc studies, the Admission Committee at Politecnico can specify some little directions on the individual study plan, regarding the choice of elective courses.
Technical common base – mandatory courses (total ECTS = 21)
- DATA BASES 2 – 5 ECTS, I semester
- SOFTWARE ENGINEERING 2 – 5 ECTS, I semester
- COMPUTING INFRASTRUCTURES – 6 ECTS, II semester
- MODEL IDENTIFICATION AND DATA ANALYSIS 1 – 5 ECTS, II semester
Elective courses (3 choices, total ECTS = 15)
- ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING – 5 ECTS, I semester
- EMBEDDED SYSTEMS – 5 ECTS, I semester
- SENSOR SYSTEMS – 5 ECTS, I semester
- CONTROL OF INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS – 5 ECTS, I semester
- FOUNDATION OF OPERATION RESEARCH – 5 ECTS, II semester

I&E Minor – Innovation & Entrepreneurship courses (Total ECTS = 24)
- STRATEGY & MARKETING – 10 ECTS, I semester
- DESIGNING DIGITAL BUSINESS INNOVATION LAB – 10 ECTS, II semester
- I&E Summer School – 4 ECTS, II semester
The Innovation & Entrepreneurship Summer School brings all EIT Digital students together for two weeks to work in groups on a business modelling and planning project in the context of a societally relevant thematic area. Summer Schools take place at different locations throughout Europe, supporting a multidisciplinary and international dimension, with a clear EIT Digital flavour to education.
The I&E Minor will be increasingly offered in a blended format, with online modules and innovative teaching methods (blended I&E Education).
